New Gallery in the House

It’s October, so that means it’s time for a new photo gallery here at milestonkin.com. Those keeping score will note that this is probably the 39th change to the gallery since I launched this little website all those years ago. What can I say? I’m fickle!

I’ve switched from Flickr which I generally hate to Apple’s MobileMe gallery which has a simplier more intuitive interface and gives a lot more options to the viewer. You can still access it by clicking the “Gallery” link at the top right of this page or by going directly to http://gallery.me.com/milestonkin. You’ll still preview thubnails of recently uploaded photos on the right hand toolbar.

It’s the little changes that make the big differences, don’t you think?

The new hotness…

So, in an never ending mission to make my website bigger and better, I’ve implemented (work speak!) a new sub site of milestonkin.com. It’s an idea I’ve had for a while but was never able to do, because I didn’t have the tools. The site is a new photojournal blog, where I will only be uploading photos along with short captions. The idea is that I take one photo every day and post it online to this blog. After a while, the site will start to resemble a journal of sorts, documenting my daily life. This differs from the gallery in that it is based more on a timeline and isn’t just a huge collection of photos from a specfic event!

“What will the photos be of Miles?”, I hear you ask. Well, to be honest I’m not really sure. For the most part it would be cool if they could represent my daily life, but of course that could really be anything and many days the subject might not be that exciting. Exciting or not though, I think it’s importrant to keep doing it on a regular basis so as to form a complete series. Of course as with anything, there will be days where I forget, but I will attempt to catch up if I do.

The address for the site is http://photojournal.milestonkin.com but it can also be accesed directly from the new link in the right of the header of this site (my blog if you are reading this via RSS).

The tool in question that now allows me to do this is my new iPhone, and yes it is that cool and then some, but that’s the subject of a seperate post! The point is that with it’s built in camera and ability to publish directly to the web, I can be anywhere and take a photo and put it online immeditely!

I started posting photos on Monday, the day I picked up my iPhone so there are already some pictures there, go check it out!

Oh Technology! Why do I love thee so?!

More changes…

Those of you who actually visit this site, rather than subscribe via RSS will notice a few cosmetic changes around here.

I think I’ve finally found a theme for this site that I like the look of, so I’ll be sticking with it until…..I get bored and change it again!

You will also notice the addition of a “Friend Feed” feed on the sidebar to right

This lists all my updates to various other social sites, such as twitter, BrightKite and also videos that I favorite on you tube. I tend to update these more often, so even if there are no new posts on this blog, you can check the feed and see what I’m “tweeting” or watching on you tube!

Back to Sq1

So as you have probably already noticed (unless you’re reading this via RSS), I have changed a few things here at milestonkin.com. The changes are not merely visual, I’ve also moved to a new, better, shiner web host. There was nothing particularly wrong with the old one, but I’d outgrown them and plus I realized I could pay less and get more elsewhere. I’m also finally free of Blogger in particular and Google in general and milestonkin.com is now brought to you by WordPress. So far, I’m very impressed.

The basics seem to be in place and everything moved across ok. There are legacy issues, such as broken links to images. Unfortunately since I never had a consistent way of uploading images in the old days, there is no straight forward to way to avoid this. I could spend a few hours going back through the all the posts (who am I kidding, it would probably only take me 5 minutes!) and manually fix the links, but I don’t think I really care that much.

Other minor issues include two gallery links above, albums in the gallery with incorrect dates and in the wrong order and old posts not having tags. Since tags are new to milestonkin.com with WordPress, I think we will just draw a line under that and say that all posts from now on will have tags. There…much simpler! The other issues will get resolved as we move forward. I’ll probably be tinkering for a while, but the basic look and feel should stay the same.

Apart from the more pleasing design and lower cost, the site is also much easier to maintain now. Just don’t expect me to blog any more often!!

Thanks to Tryphoon for all the technical support!
